Gwylfan-y-Glaerwen

The phenomenal story of a Grand Designs project in Carmarthenshire. The beautiful sea view location, the surrounding countryside both act as a source of immense inspiration and motivation for creating this extraordinary home. Embracing great design and modern environmentally friendly technology this house is going to be the envy of many. Follow the journey as we go from demolishing the architecturally disadvantaged bungalow with no design appeal at all, through to the building of a spatially perfect construction, the installation of the green elements, and finally to the fine polishing of the the finishing touches.

The ingredients

First find a really boring building.

Look at it from all angles - and it is still really boring - with no charm or character.  This was to be a golf club where a 9 hole golf course was already functioning.

Take one Mental Hospital - circa 1880 - remove useful parts.

Remove useful parts of an earlier building - say 1860 - Bath stone window surrounds - style Gothic!

A very tall stained glass window - glass and stone - in serious need of repair.

ADD SPECTACULAR VIEWS

View towards the Gower and on a clear day Devon and Lunday island.

Sunset over Laugharne - home to Dylan Thomas - Laugharne castle

Sir John Hill with Pendine in the distance and on the horizon Tenby and Caldy Island

The wildlife - Geese flying over the garden - on a clear day we can see the hills in the distance.

The beach at Llansteffan - looking across the estuary to Ferryside.
