Finding the Dream

Our dream was to find a house with a large garden and well away from a road. We searched for many months – scanning the advertisements in the local papers – collecting information and finally finding the advertisement and details of Llanfoist House. Estate Agent jargon omitted the condition details, what captured our imagination was the drive lined with Scots Fir trees, the conservatory and that it was a large house. We could turn it into flats and let some of it to pay the mortgage, we could grow vegetables and live cheaply, we could have a goat and milk it – we would have safe magical space for our little girl – our cats would not be run over on the road. The price was way out of our budget and it was impossible in those days to get much of a mortgage and completely impossible to raise money on old buildings.

So on a sunny day in late February the journey was made from Pontypool to find this hidden treasure.

Llanfoist House

Large period Georgian house for sale Abergavenny

Llanfoist House front elevation

Llanfoist House, a large roomy Georgian house in Abergavenny, is now for sale.  Located on the outskirts of Abergavenny, but within easy distance of towns like Monmouth and Newport, this home is secluded and yet easily accessible with excellent road and rail links to other major centres.   It is a major part of a Georgian manor house in garden and grounds of  approximately eight acres.  The garden is large and includes formal and informal planting, a potager kitchen garden, an orchard and paddocks with stabling and fodder storage.  We have lived in this wonderful house and loved it for 37 years and now is the time to find new custodians to care for it and live the quality of life that can be enjoyed in these beautiful surroundings and in a house that is generous in its proportions and in its spirit.  Our decision to create this comprehensive website is because a home like this deserves much more than a three page brochure and short description and numbers of bedrooms etc.  It is intended to show what there is to look forward to in living in a place like this and the kind of life style that is vital in this day and age when everything is too intense and hurried.

Schools near Abergavenny

Secondary Schools

There are several very good schools within easy reach of Abergavenny.  The girls and boys boarding Haberdashers schools in Monmouth have fantastic reputations and achieve high Oxford and Cambridge entries.  Our daughter and granddaughter both went to the girls school and our granddaughter is now reading english in Oxford. Charles was head of department in the boys school for a number of years. Monmouth schools run a private bus service to and from Abergavenny every school day.  The bus in fact passes the end of our drive which could not be easier. I am sure that Christ College Brecon operate a bus service as well.

luxury home accessories

Touch of luxury

If you want to own some luxurious pieces for your own home to create something of the atmosphere of Llanfoist House then a couple of days in and around Abergavenny will be a treat.  Call into our studios and see if there is anything there that might capture your imagination.  It is just a thought - if you don't want to buy the whole house, you can buy something to create corners  of exotic luxury.  If you are an artist and are looking for a garden filled with inspirational colours - just see from where our inspiration has come and know that, through the seasons, you will always be enchanted by what you find.

Very few of our curtains will fit our new windows, so where, for instance, in the dining room the curtains are made to complement the hand printed silk on the walls - we are happy to negotiate.  I might however need the brass pole.

Travel to and from - commuting

Road links

Llanfoist is remarkably well connected to the rest of the UK by road.  Within half a mile of the house  is a network of dual carriage ways.  The M4 is 22 miles away leading to London and Bristol via the Severn Bridge.  London is under three hours traveling time with Bristol only about one hour away.  It is about thirty miles to Cardiff and seventy to Birmingham via the M50 and M5 which in turn connects to the M6 and the north of England.

Airports

Again Llanfoist is within easy reach of several airports.  Heathrow is of course the airport that offers the greatest choice of flights to all parts of the world.  However, international as well as European and regional flights are available at Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham Airports which are about one hour away by road except Birmingham which is slightly longer.  We have regularly flown out of Cardiff to Paris and Amersterdam.

Rail services

There is a very good train service to all parts of the UK from Abergavenny station with at least hourly services and half hourly services at peak times both North and South.  Trains from Abergavenny to Newport connect to half hourly services to London.  Newport to London is about 1 hour 40 minutes duration due to the high speed trains.  It is worth noting that there is a very frequent coach link to Heathrow from Reading station which is the last stop before London. Finally it has just been announced that the line to London is going to be electrified in the very near future which will reduce journey times further.
